There are lots of chairs in the world, but only few – iconic. Those chairs everyone who is interested in design should know.We would like to introduce you  the best iconic chairs ever made by famous designers.Most of original items of iconic chairs you will find only in museum, some of them are reproduce by now by leading design companies who has license like Knoll or Vitra.

MICHAEL THONET | CHAIR 14

MICHAEL THONET | ARMCHAIR 14

Chair 14 and Armchair 14 designed in 1859 by Michael Thonet. The chairs are the results of experimentation into the bending of solid wood. Chairs remainds one of the most successful industrial designed produced of all the time.

GERRIT RIETVELD | RED BLUE CHAIR

Originally designed in 1917-18 by Rietveld with natural wood finish. Rietveld painted this chair in 1923 as a result of his association with the De Stij movement.

MARCEL BREUER | WASSILY

Designed in 1925 by Marcel Breuer for Wassily Kadinsky’s quarters at the Dessau Bauhaus. Inspired by the frame of a bicycle and influenced by the constructivist theories of the De Stjil movement.

MARCEL BREUER | MODEL NO. B33

Designed in 1927 by Marcel Breuer. Design of this chair eliminate the visual division between the base and seat. Construction gives more comfort to chair.

MARCEL BREUER | MODEL NO. B64

Model NO.B32 and NO.B64 were designed in 1928 by Marcel Breuer. In these chairs Breuer used  traditional craftsmanship, industrial methods and material to make tubular steel furniture. The cantilevered form exploits the possibilities unique to the material and gives the chair added flexibility and comfort.

LUDVIG MIES VAN DER ROHE | MR40

Designed in 1927 by Ludvig Mies Van der Rohe, represents the earliest steel furniture designed by Van der Rohe. Chair was inspired by 19th iron rocking chairs.

LUDVIG MIES VAN DER ROHE | MR50

Designed in 1927 by Ludvig Mies Van der Rohe for his Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic.The chair  is celebrated for its lean profile, clean lines and details.  MR50 chair is the icon of 20th-century design.

LE CORBUSIER | B3013

Designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. The chair was one of the first tubular steel designs by Le Corbusier. Chair has ergonomically resolved form.

LE CORBUSIER | LC7

Designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. LC7 also know as “Grand Confort” the chair is a luxury project and epitomizes the International Style. 

CHARLOTTE PERRIAND | B302

Designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1930-33. 

JEAN PAUCHARD | A56 TOLIX

Designed in 1956. It was a type of chair which was large manufactured, it was a low cost solution due to its easy of manufacture and economic use of materials.

 

GERRIT RIETVELD | ZIG ZAG

Designed in 1942 The angle of the chair can be known as response to Theo van Doesburg’s call in 1924 for the introduction of “oblique” lines to resolve the tension between vertical and horizontal lines.

SALVADOR DALI | MAE WEST SOFA

Designed in 1934 by Salvador Dali. This surrealist sofa was executed by Green & Abbot London and Jean-Michel Frank in Paris.

 

CHARLES EAMES & EERO SAARINEN | ORGANIC CHAIR

Designed by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen in 1940. Char was created as part of their entry for ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’, a competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

 

CHARLES EAMES | LCW

Designed in 1945. Time magazine called the LCW “the chair of the century.”

HANS J. WEGNER | CH24

Also know as Wishbone Chair.  This iconic design was the last part of a Wegner series inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs.

HANS J. WEGNER | CH20

Designed in 1956. Hans J. Wegner experimented with new materials like moulded veneer. The chair’s seat is made from 11 layers of this material and  it gives perfect stability.

CHARLES EAMES | ROCKING CHAIR

Rocking Armchair also know as The RAR. Classic modernist chair. Designed in 1948 by Charles Eames for the Museum of Modern Art’s (MOMA) for International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design’ in 1948, where it won first prize.

EERO SAARINEN | WOMB CHAIR

Designed in 1948 at Florence Knoll’s request for “a chair that was like a basket full of pillows – something she could really curl up in.”

HANS WEGNER | FLAG HALYARD

Designed in 1950.  The Flag Halyard chair is unlike most other Wegner designs in that it has no historical precedent.

ERWINE & ESTELLE | LAVERNE CHAMPAGNE

Designed in 1957. Inspired by Saarinen’s earlier “Tulip” chair. Design of the chair is timeless, the pedestal and transparent shell gives a unique lightness.

HARRY BERTOIA | SIDE CHAIR

Designed in 1950.  The Flag Halyard chair is unlike most other Wegner designs in that it has no historical precedent.

HARRY BERTOIA | DIAMOND CHAIR

Bertoia Side chair and Diamond chair was designed in 1950-52  for design that works in every room. They are master sculptors of mid century. They were produced by hands.
